The Age of Athleisure

Monday, November 13, 2017

Once thought to be only appropriate for gym bunnies and Sporty Spice, over the last few years, the line between athletic-wear and leisure-wear has become blurred. It’s now not unusual or unacceptable for people to remain in their athletic-wear all day.

Ever since the sleek white plimsolls were debuted on the catwalks of Celine and Saint Laurent, we all began to stockpile Stan Smiths (or was that just me?!). Beyonce created a whole brand – IVY PARK - out of athleisure-wear with high street giant TOPSHOP , Kanye West collabbed with Adidas to create his Yeezy’s and Rihanna made Fenty x Puma.

Whether you own the fluffy sliders from Puma, or the infamous wide leg popper trousers from Zara, I think the majority of us would have to say yes when asked if we have bought anything in that fell into the trend, whether it was knowingly or unknowingly. Athleisure has seeped into the high street shops and infiltrated our shopping baskets.

More recently, even designer ERDEM included hoodies in his collaboration with H&M (a nod to streetwear that was not expected from the designer known for his delicate and intricate designs), which Vogue cited ‘might be their favourite’ piece from the collection probably because it is so versatile and wearable!

I for one am a huge fan of this trend, and to say I have embraced it is an understatement.

Whilst in London, I practically lived in my Stan Smith trainers. Around the office, paired with some black smart trousers and a thin jumper, it quickly became my go-to uniform. To me, the trainers still felt chic, smart and clean. I still felt put-together whilst wearing them.

With many other celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid and Rita Ora championing the athleisure trend, whatever the time of day or occasion, it’s hard to imagine that this trend will be going anywhere anytime soon.

What do you think?
